Alice was born in 1827. She was the daughter of Jonathan Crook and Martha Latham. She passed away in 1857. [1]
b Holin Bank, Lancs. 12.2.1827 (A Hollin Bank at Helmshore next to Bridge End .1951 census says Bridge End – at Helmshore). Baptised in Blackburn at Ebenezer Chapel on 23.4.1837( age 10) Same time as brother James Leatham, Parents Jonathen Crook and Martha nee Laytham - abode, Holin Bank. In 1841 was with mother (Martha, nee Laytham -1791) and siblings, Benjamin(20), May[Mary] Ann(20), Elizabeth(15), James(10) - Thomas and George already left home and father had died) at Nuttall Row, Bury, Walmersley cum Shuttleworth[nearer Rawtenstall than Bury] and Benjamin was a carter; May and Elizabeth were factory hands. Married John Hoyle (b1824 in Worsthorne Lancs.; his parents were James Hoyle[c1799, Haslingden – 1850, Burnley] and Mary nee Nuttall, 1804 Burnley) in 1845 at Hyndburn Register Office. In 1851 she[24, b Bridge End] was at Newchurch, Haslingden with husband John Hoyle[25, cotton] and daughter Phoebe(b 4.6.1849 at Newchurch - father, weaver, abode Waterside, mother nee Crook. Phebe baptised 5.5.1850 at St. Nicholas, Newchurch, Rossendale). Also had children: James (1846-47); Benjamin (b 21.6.1851, christened 21.4.1852 at St. Nicholas, Newchurch; abode-Bridleway[300m from St. Nicholas's]; Father weaver); Alice Ann(b 10.5.1853, christened 5.6.1853 at St. Nicholas, abode-Bridleway; father weaver); Elizabeth Mary (b 15.5.1855, christened 10.6.1855 at St. Nicholas; abode-Bridleway; father weaver) all born in Newchurch, Rossendale and all mother nee Crook). Alice Selina died in 1857[age 30] in Newchurch in Rossendale(buried at St. Nicholas on 13.2.1857, abode Bridleway). John remarried to Martha Thornton (b 1826, Benton, Yorkshire) in 1859 at Hyndburn Registry Office. In 1861 he was at Warth Building, Worth Lane, Bury Cowpe Lenches Newhallhey & Hall Carr(Rawtenstall) with wife Martha[35, b Benton, Yorkshire) and children Phoebe(age 11, piecer of cotton and scholar), Benjamin (age 10, woollen printer fareboy) and Alice Ann(age 7); Elizabeth not there. John was cotton powerloom weaver and Martha was housekeeper and they had a 2mth. old son, Robert. In 1871 Martha[44, weaver] was a widow at Warth, Newchurch with 2 children, Christopher[10] and Jane Ann[8]. Hoyle a very common name in this area. A Benjamin Hoyle[20, birth Higher Booths] was a boarder at Love Clough and a calico printworks labourer in 1871. Phoebe married James Taylor(b c1838, Rawtenstall) in 1871 at Hyndburn Registry Office and in 1871 census was[21, cotton rover] at Newchurch at home of Mary Taylor[48, widow, b Tottington ? her Aunt - could it be her aunt, Mary Ann Crook,b 1822] with husband James Taylor[32, cotton spinner] and her sisters Alice Ann[18, cotton drawer] and Elizabeth Mary Hoyle[15, cotton winder]. They had son, George William Taylor - [Child] of James Taylor & Phoebe; Born: 18 May 1871; Baptism: 26 Nov 1871 St Nicholas, Newchurch in Rossendale, Lancs. Abode: Alma Cottages; father,Winder - see Phoebe for 2nd marriage. Elizabeth Mary Hoyle[18, drawer, spinster of Cloughfold] married William Leach[18, weaver of Banks] on 16.8.1873 at St. Nicholas, Newchurch in Rossendale - fathers John Hoyle, weaver and James Leach, millwright.
