Robert was born about 1803.[1] He may be the son of "Polly" Glendinning. [2]

As of 1831 he lived at Claggan, Lissan, Co. Londonderry with family consisting of 3 males, 3 females and 1 servant. [3]

He passed away 4 Aug 1866 at Claggan, Lissan. He was a farmer.[4][5]

He is buried at Claggan Presbyterian Church Graveyard, with wife Esther [6]

Research Notes

Griffith's Valuation

The Griffith's Valuation for Claggan, 2 March 1859, has:

  • Robert Crookes, sen. - Leases 43 acres + 15 acres
  • Robert Crookes, jun. - Leases 7 acres
  • Samuel Crookes, leases 16 acres
  • James Crookes, leases 4 acres

It seems likely "sen." is this one, and "jun." is Robert Crooks (1823-).

There was another Robert Crooks of Claggan, son of John Crooks (1831-1882) who signs the latter's death record.

Children of Robert Crooks snr.

People named in the will:

  • Son: Alexander
  • Wife Esther Crooks
  • Daughter: Martha
  • Alexander (a farm in Cleggan near to Dirnan)
  • William (a farm in Cleggan)
  • David Crooks of Mobuoy(?), executor.
  • John Mitchell of Drumlea, executor. This looks like the father-in-law of Martha -- probably not if the same person as the husband of Nancy!
  • John Crooks, Claggan, witness.

The profile Alexander Crooks (abt.1845-1871) gives place as Dunmore and father as Robert Crooks. It's not clear whether this is Robert sen. of Claggan, Robert jun. of Claggan, or another Robert of Dunmore. (There's no Robert of Dunmore in the 3CP notes, nor Griffith's).

From the 1831 census we can infer that there was another female older than David -- although conceivably it might be a parent rather than a daughter.

Other relatives

There is a Jane Crooks b. 1814 m. Robert McKinney of Dunmore.[7]

This page has a Henry Crooks of Mabuoy, son of Robert Crooks, farmer; marring Jane Creighton of Claggan dau. of Johjn Creighton.
