Sidney was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and grew up in Cole Harbour, just outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has one younger sister named Taylor.
Sidney has played Professional Ice Hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins since he was the first pick for the Penguins in 2005, and has stayed with that team ever since.
As Captain of the Penguins, Sidney led that team to its 2nd consecutive Stanley Cup win in June 2017.
