Edith was the fifth child of John and Elizabeth (Wedge) Crosby [1].
At the time of the 1871 census, she was living with her parents and siblings in Carlton, just a few miles from the village where her mother had grown up [2].
By the time of the 1881 census, both of Edith's parents had died, and she was living in Bury St Edmunds - along with her siblings Charles and Florence - all recorded as boarders in the home of Harriot Frost, widow, and her two children . All three Crosby children are noted as being scholars (one of Harriot's children is recorded as being a teacher) [3].
In the fourth quarter of 1890, Edith married Major Allen Claydon, in Newmarket, Suffolk. In the 1891 Census, the couple were living in a cottage on The Green, Kirtling, Newmarket, Cambridgeshire. with Major recorded as an inn keeper [4].
By the 1901 census, they were living at Marks Farm, Stradishall, Risbridge, Suffolk, England, with two children (Ellen and Robert) and a "mothers help". The two children had been born in different places, suggesting they moved around the area [5].
In the 1911 Census, although Major was living in the neighbouring county with their eldest son - Robert John - (and had recorded himself as married) Edith has recorded herself as a Widow, living on independent means, with her daughter Ellen (who was out on the night of the census), and an eight year old boy, Charles Roland Claydon. She recorded her number of children as two. At that time she was living in Union Street, Stowmarket, Suffolk [6].
At the time of the 1939 Register, Edith was living at The Lodge, South Cambridgeshire, with William, Alice and Norah Halford [7].
An 81 year old Edith Jane Claydon was buried in West Wratting in November 1950.
