John was born about 1840. Proprietor of the Central City Hotel.
From the San Luis Obispo Tribune (Weekly), Volume XIII, Number 648, 14 January 1882:
An enterprising hotel-keeper contributed the sum of $5O for the privilege of naming the place. He selected Central City. Central was a good word to hitch “City” to, and the “city” was what the hotel-keeper was after. He argued that tourists and other travelers would be attracted by the name, and being strangers, and anxious to see all the large places, would of course visit Central City. Once lauded there, and the landlord had them for a meal or two, and probably a night’s lodgings. He claims that he has caught more than enough traveling suckers to recompense him for the christening fee.
He passed away in 1925.
