My Mom, Dorothy (Crosby) Meador, I and my brother, Bill used to visit my Grandparents on their farm in Union County, SC often on the weekends as Bill and I were growing up. We lived in Hendersonville, NC about 70 miles away. Edith and Edna lived in Columbia SC and worked for Southern Bell and they would drive up from there. Nell, my other aunt was a school teacher (as was my Mom) and would also drive in from where she was living. I loved these weekends. Grandmama and the daughters would cook (I can just remember when Grandmama had a wood burning cook stove!). The food was delicious. Also, Hendersonville was a small town but still, we lived in town. At my grandparent's farm, my brother and I had acres of woods to explore. Plus Granddad had mules and a wagon and other farm equipment pulled by the mules.
Edith and Edna were not able to go to college for financial reasons (the Great Depression) but Mom and Nell were sent to Winthrop in Rock Hill SC. Edith and Edna always resented not being able to further their education. They went to work for Southern Bell Telephone after WWII and worked there in the bookkeeping Dept. all their working lives. Edith died early with Lupus but because of the company's generous stock investment program, their longevity at work, and their frugality, Edna died a millionaire!
