Biography

Charles Wedge Crosby's birth was registered in the first quarter of 1867.[1] He was privately baptised, perhaps by his Grandfather at Burrough Green, on 14 February 1867. [2]

In the 1871 Census, four year old Charles is listed in the home of his parents Elizabeth and John who were living in Carlton, Linton, Cambridgeshire. Also in the household were: a step sister from his father's previous marriage (Annie, 17), and three sisters (Florence, Elizabeth, and Edith aged from 7 to 2). There were also three servants in the home.[3]

An Elizabeth Crosby died at Bury St Edmunds just five years later in 1876, just two years after her husband John had died [6], when Charles would have been just nine years old.[4]

By the time of the next census in 1881, both his parents had died, and he was living in Bury St Edmunds - along with two of his sisters: Florence and Edith - recorded as a boarder in the home of Harriot Frost, widow, and her two children. All three Crosby children are noted as being scholars (one of Harriot's children is recorded as being a teacher). [5]

Nineteen year old Chas W. Crosby is listed on the passenger list of the Carthaginian, having sailed from Liverpool for Quebec, arriving 5 Aug 1886. [6]

Charles Crosby and Catherine Scott married at Wallace, Manitoba, Canada on 14 Oct 1897. [7]

Charles W. and scottish-born Katherine Crosby are listed in the 1901 Census of Manitoba. Charles is listed as a farmer. In their household are two little Canadian-born children aged 1 & 2, along with two servants. [8]

In the 1916 Census, Charles and Catherine were listed living in Third Street, Elkhorn, Bandon, Manitoba. Now Charles is listed as working as an editor. In their household they have six children (Frank L, Lorna G, Florence E, Irene E, Mary A, and Edith M) aged 17 to 6 years old. [9]

In the 1921 Census of Canada for Stephen, Brandon, Manitoba, Charles and Catherine were still living in Third Street, with five children at home, the youngest being 4 year old Charlie. [10] Charles was listed as working as an insurance salesman.

In the 1935 Voter lists, Charles and Catherine are listed living in Elkhorn, Brandon, Manitoba. Charles's occupation is noted as Retired Farmer. [11]

By 1953, Charles and Catherine had moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. [12] Charles is listed as retired. At the same address was their daughter

Charles died in 1958, aged about 91. He is buried in Regina Cemetery. [13]
