Asahel was born in 1763. He was the son of Asahel Cross and Mary Dimmitt.

He served 9 months in the Revolutionary War for North Carolina, marching through North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. He fought at the Battle of Hanging Rock and was stationed and served near Charleston, SC before being discharged in Wilkes, NC. After returning home he married Temperance Deadmon in March of 1779/80 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Temperance's affidavit when filing for widow's pension states that Acil died in Wilkes on October 18, 1818, after suffering a pain the side and severe vomiting.
