Biography

Charles was born in 1847. He was the son of John Cross and Ellen Douglass. He passed away in 1925.

Daily Telegraph (Sydney, NSW : 1883 - 1930), Thursday 12 November 1925, page 11. [1] MR. CHARLES D. CROSS Mr. Charles David Cross, who died at his residence, Wiseman's Ferry, on Monday, was one of the best known personalities in the district. He was born at Wiseman's Ferry 79 years ago, and his father and mother were also born there. Mr. Cross, who had spent all his life on the river, was an authority on the history of the district, and possessed a fund of information concerning the early days, when the convicts were engaged on the Great Northern Road. Mr. Cross married Miss Mary Singleton, a descendant of another old Hawkesbury family, and she and five sons and five daughters survive him. In his earlier years Mr, Cross was engaged in contracting work, having helped to make many important arterial roads, and later took up farming and fruit-growing. For some years he had lived in retirement, and had been in ill-health for several months. The esteem in which Mr. Cross was held was evidenced by the gathering at the funeral in Wiseman's Ferry Cemetery on Tuesday. It was one of the largest assemblages seen in the district, practically every old family on the river being represented. The service was read by Rev. G. L. W. Rooke, of St. Albans. Of the family, most of whom live in or near Sydney, the sons are: Messrs. Henry, Fred, Percy, Albert, and Herbert Cross, and the daughters Mesdames G. H. Fursser (Homebush), G. Thobald (Sydney), F. Willmott (Strathfield), C. Tallantyre (Merrylands). and S. East (North Sydney).
