William was born on 17 December 1835. He was the son of John Cross and Jane Houston. He was christened on 3 January 1836 at Manchester Cathederal. The family were living in Chorlton on Medlock and his father was a Groom. This record also shows his date of birth.

In the 1841 census William (age 5) was on Lloyd Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England.[3]
William died age 24 on 24 April 1860 of consumption and was buried at St George Hulme on 29 April 1860. He was described on this record as a 'pattern card maker'. [4][5]
