Biography

Adney Eldridge Cross, Sr., was born in 1874 in Kentucky. Son of John William Cross and Mary Anne Washurn. He attended Collie School in Marshall Co., KY, and attended some school in Murray, KY., studying Greek, Latin, and the Bible.

He was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1910 and served the 1st Baptist Church, Benton, KY, then Smithland, KY (1914-5), Coldwater in Calloway Co., Union Ridge and New Zion Congregation in Marshall Co., Morganfield, Cumberland Gap (1923-4) in KY; Elksville, IL (1925-6); Associational Missionary in Lone Oak, McCracken Co., KY, around 1928-9, and Tazeville, TN (1930-1).

He married first, Elizabeth Brown Gold about 1900. They had:

2. Marshall Hugo Cross 1905–1914
3. Mary Adeline Cross 1914 - 1914

Elizabeth passed away of nephritis one day after the birth of Mary Adeline in 1914. He married second, Ora Mae Ferron in Benton, Marshall, Kentucky about 1915. They had:

1. Ora Elizabeth Cross 1916 - 1918
2. Adney Eldridge Cross, Jr. 1919 - 1964

He passed away in 1954 of tuberculosis, (aged 79–80) in Memphis, TN., and is buried in Strow Cemetery, Benton, Marshall County, Kentucky.
