Hello!

I noticed that you're working on pre-1700-era profiles. This is just a reminder that certifying to work on these types of profiles means that you agree to add valid sources as outlined in the Pre-1700 Help Page.

If you need help with this, our G2G Forum is a great place to start. You can get there by clicking the link on the Help menu.

Thanks!

Hi Simon,

Thanks for responding to the Ireland Project check-in. The project currently requires that all members work on at least one team, but we don't have a team listed for you. Please take a look at the project page here and let me know which team you would prefer to join. Thanks,

Jen

Hi Simon,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Simon -thank you for being a member of the Jewish Roots Project! I wanted to let you know about some new things we have going on.

- You can see new tabs at the top of our home page, where you can select topics to view or work on. You can also use our new maintenance categories - feel free to add them to your own family, or any other Jewish Roots profile, or work on the maintenance yourself, such as adding new records to profiles with only a couple sources.

-I'm sending an invitation to join GoogleGroups, which we are re-starting this week. We'll probably do most group chat there, but the most important things will be posted on G2G, which you will be notified about if you follow the jewish_roots tag.

-You can also join Wikitree's discord server, where we have a Jewish Roots chat channel.

-If you have ideas or suggestions for the project, feel free to reply here or send me a message.

Thank you! -Elaine, co-leader for Jewish Roots Project

Hi Simon,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

Hi Simon!

Some time ago, you have expressed your interest in Project Belgium. The project has recently been promoted from a free-space project to a more official project (actually a sub-project of Europe)! You can find the (revamped) project page here.

That means among other things that you can now receive a project badge (of the Europe Project) indicating your involvement, that we can more easily create stickers, that we will be able to discuss and "officially" establish guidelines and standards relating to Belgian profiles, and that we will have a project account for important Belgian profiles.

If you're still interested, could you (re)confirm your interest to become a member of Project Belgium by answering this g2g post? I will then make sure you receive the (Europe) badge!

Best regards,

Filip

Hi Simon and thanks for your post on G2G.

I’ve added the Irish Roots Project badge to your profile. I've also added your good self to the member interest page. Here you can let others know which counties or names you are researching etc.

Thanks for joining the project and good luck with your research.

Simon, do you happen to speak any other languages? Would you check out our languages template and add it to your biography? For example you might add

{{ Languages | en | ro-2 | he-1 }}

to the top of your biography if you speak English natively, intermediate Rumanian and basic Hebrew, or you could use de-4 to specify near-native German or ru-2 for intermediate Russian, and so forth up to ten languages.

It really helps to know who speaks all the different languages used on WikiTree! If there is a language you speak that is missing from our categories, I would be happy to add it. If you only speak English, you're very welcome to use this text to make that clear:

{{ Languages | en }}

Thanks,

Welcome, Michael to Wikitree and also to the Jewish Roots project !! Bob Hvitfeldt, who connected with you about the latter, I think, gave your name to me. He's a linguist by retired trade, and while that's the scientific version of the humanities, I'm by nature the same kind of person you said you are. I'm so happy to meet you. It's a rare thing to meet someone with similar persuasions accidentally. I initiated and established JR project, and I'm 21% Jewish; Bob's about 50%. Thanks for being among us.
Hi and welcome to the South African Roots Project , we're very happy to have you as a member of our team, so thanks for joining ! Greetings and have a wonderful day - the South African Roots Team :)
Hi Simon,

Congratulations on being Pre-1700 certified! Now it's time to pick a project that best fits the pre-1700 profiles you'll be working on. Is there a particular time period, location, or topic you're interested in? Look at the list of active projects to see if one fits your needs. Once you find a project that interests you, visit their project page for more information and to find out how to join. You can also use the Following link to add the project tag to your profile, and you'll be kept up to date on any activity that occurs for that project. Can't find what you're looking for? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions!

Hi Simon, Maybe you would consider joining the South African project

Hi again Simon, thanks for your private mail. Regarding your request to join the project, you are very welcome once you've found your feet in WikiTree technically wise. It can be a steep learning curve and the project is not the proper place to be learning the basics of WikiTree, even if one has done the obligatory Pre-1700 Quiz. Many of our the profiles of our common ancestors such as Johannes Smit (abt. 1652 - 1696), have already been made. Once you've signed the Wiki Genealogist Honor Code), you only need to link you own line up to the nearest already existing profile. Which also means you might have to start with creating your own direct ancestors:

It is the mission of WikiTree to have only one profile of every person, which means that it is important to search before one creates new profiles. 1 tip on how to avoid duplicates when searching, is to search on the surname [socalled LNAB - LastNameAtBaptism/Birth] only, and then sort on birth [oldest to the top], dense version [to the right of the screen]. This way you'll find more than 100 hits. If you search only on first names or in combination of first and surnames, you'll only see the first 100 results being presented where there might be a few hundred or perhaps a few thousand. It is also important to remember to search on variant spellings as well. It is the policy of WikiTree to write the LNAB as can be exactly read in the first most primary record found for a person, which are in many cases the baptism or marriage records (or transcription thereof). All other variants within that person's life time, must be aka'd or made note of in the biography.

On making new profiles, make sure that before you save a profile for the first time, that you edit the LNAB according to the local conventions of the country. For South Africa (and even Europe) this spel the suffixes in lower case spelling: van der Walt, du Preez, van den Berg, van der Merwe [ens.]. This program automatically creates surnames starting with capitals, unless you correct them before saving. Also - it is very important to use sources and cite them throught proper referencing.

There is a lot of information still to be added to the "master profiles". We are still in the process of collating facts and you at times will see mistakes. Important is not to just 'force' data or disconnect and re-connect profiles - everything has to be done in agreement with the other active contributors. Basically the first goal of this project is to find the exact spelling of the LNAB (Last Name at Baptism) and upload the validation (transcription and / or photograph) so that the profile could be edited into that name and be protected. That and the exact connections to the parents if possible [therefore their LNsAB should also be validated through research]. This is important because we do not as yet create narrative (if there is narrative it always has a source); narrative (altough you'll find it as well) follows the facts. We try and source and cite all facts as best we can. On the Project homepage > Goals & Process section there is a description of the proces.

Please mail me if you need advice; I'll get to you a.s.a.p. Regards, Philip

Hi Simon, you wrote: Hello Philip,

I would like to join this project. My Grandfather x10 is http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Smit-35 Regards Simon

Thanks for writing and asking. I would you to take the following into consideration. You do not need to be part of this project in order to trace more of your origins and to complete your family tree. To the contrary; taking part in this project can take time off your mission and could be very demanding. Also, working (collaborating) in a Wiki environment can be quite challenging - also technically. You have you have only made 1 contribution thus far, I would suggest that you first connect your own family manually to the already existing profiles. What I will do, is to agree to personally mentor you until such time as you can be a project member.
