Biography

Eleanor "Nelly" Taylor Mudditt née Crossman was born in 1876 at Tynemouth, UK.[1] She died in 1951, aged c. 73.[2]

She was brought up in Tynemouth. Her father died when she was about 4 years old. Her mother subsequently moved to South Shields, on the other side of the mouth of the River Tyne, taking her children with her.

Nelly married Frederick Henry Mudditt in 1904 at Tynemouth.[3] He was about three years younger than her.[4] They had at least two children: Henry and Mary Ann. Fred was a platelayer (for the Tyne Improvement Commission) from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, UK.[4] He lost his job in the Great Depression of the 1930s and never got back into work. Fred outlived Nelly by about 10 years, dying in 1961, aged c. 80, in Tynemouth.[5]

Nelly's niece Elsie recollected that Nelly was the poorest and the plainest of the eight Crossman sisters (who were all good-looking apart from her), but she had a big heart and looked after everybody.

Nelly always lived near the River Tyne in north-eastern England. After marrying, she lived in South Shields. Later she lived in Byker or Heaton on the northern side of the river.
