Edith was born on either 28 September or 28 October 1904 at Chadderton, Lancashire, the daughter of William Thomas Crossman and Florence Dronsfield.
In the 1911 census Edith was living with her mother at 52 Milne St, Chadderton. She was aged 6 and attending school. Her father, an auctioneer, was away from home working.
Edith's parents separated and William remarried in 1932.
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Edith, born 28 September 1904, was aged 35. She was working at the Municipal Maternity Home (Princess Royal), Greenhead Road, Huddersfield, Yorkshire as a maternity nurse. Younger sister Winifred was also working there.
