Some of Joshua's children were Joshua, William, Mary, & Nathaniel - their mother could have been Ann Jane. Sarah was Ann Gould's daughter.

Joshua Morrell in Lot 7 died in 1858. He left a few shillings to his daughter Sarah, and everything else to his housekeeper, Ann Morrell, also known as Ann Gould.[1][2]

Research Notes

No marriage for Joshua Morrell and either Ann Jane Crossman or Ann or Ruth Gould found in NB records on the NB Provincial Archives Database, or the NB marriages database on; no record found on the Nova Scotia Historical Vital Statistics website. Joshua may not have been married to Ann Gould.

There is, according to family, a newspaper clipping that says Jane Crossman left Joshua's bed and he would not be responsible for her debts. I haven't been able to find this with the online PEI newspapers.

The family story is that Joshua and William Murray traded wives. A history of the Murrays of Bedeque by James Lawson says "William Murray and his wife Hannah Wright...had ten children. Hannah died in 1814 and in 1815 he married Ruth Gould by whom six more children were born. William did not register his parents gift of land until 1843 when he sold much of it. He died in Bedeque in 1860, known appropriately through his latter years as Old William Murray."

Joshua was living with Ann Morrell, also known as Ann Gould at the time of his death. Same woman as Ruth Gould?

Another unsourced family tree says that it was a William Morrell who married Ann Jane Crossman. Perhaps some family stories have become mixed up.

Unable to find will or admin papers for William Murray's estate.

PEI Archives holds a Crossman genealogy.

  1. Will of Joshua Morrell, Lot 7, who died about 1858. PEI Wills, Will M-43
  2. Ann Morrell was head of household in Lot 7 in 1861, probably the woman in the 45-60 age group.
