Marie Crossman has a copy of court record where is appears his mother the widow Lucy Crossman gave him to another couple to raise for a sum of $500 in 1817. On April 20, 1830, Joseph, jr. was then given the Crossman name back according to court records. She also has a letter written to Joseph Jr. from his half-nephew Joseph Newton Pierpont saying they were related. She has the original Bibles from Joseph Jr.
