Daniel Crough/Craugh/Crow/Crowe... was born in Tipperary Ireland, Cappa White parish, on an uncertain date in a ten year range, 1825-1835. The details of his ancestry are as yet quite unknown.
In 1855, Daniel Crough and Ellen Finnan were married at St Lawrence O'Toole Church.[1] [2] The Church was renamed St Igantius Loyola in 1898.
According to family lore, Daniel may have been younger than he claimed, i.e. not yet certifiably an adult, at the time of his immigration and marriage... to a woman several years his senior. His headstone indicates he died at the age of 57 or 58; he may have actually been under 50, born in 1834, not 1825.[3]
Daniel and Ellen settled first in Illinois. Four children were born there: two daughters, Julia (born 1 Jan 1857) and Ellen (born 16 Nov 1858), and two sons, James (born 1860) and Thomas (born 1862). [4]
Sometime before 1870, James was lost. Daniel took the rest of the family and joined with other Irish immigrants pioneering a farming community known as New Cambria near the town of Solomon in the newly admitted state of Kansas. The 1870 US Census lists him as head of household and a railroad laborer living on a farm with his wife and three surviving children, Julia, Ellen and Thomas.
Daniel passed away in 1883 and is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Solomon Kansas.[5]
