Mary “Ella” Ellen Crowder was born March 1873 in Lecompton, Douglas County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Captain Thomas N. Crowder (1835-1930) and Amanda (Knotts) Crowder (1840-1931). Her father was a Civil War veteran. Her grandfather was James Crowder, who settled in Douglas County in 1866. [1] [2]
She is found as “Mary E. Crowder” in the household of her parents; however, she gave her name as “Ella May Crowder” when she married. [3]
She married Fred R. Olmsted (also found as Olmstead) on December 4, 1892 in Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas. [4]
Fred and Ellen made their home in Lawrence, Kansas, where Fred was a builder. They had three children: Mildred, Marcella, and Frederick “Ted” Olmstead. On the 1910 U. S. Census, she listed her occupation as "Trained Nurse" working in private homes. Ellen was active in her community and was mentioned frequently in the local newspaper. In 1930, the Lawrence newspaper reported that she had visited her father, Captain T. N. Crowder, at the Soldiers’ Home in Leavenworth where he was recovering from a fall. [5] [6]
Ellen Olmstead died September 16, 1942, in Lawrence, Kansas. Her burial place is unknown. [7]
