Thomond ceased to exist as a cultural and legal entity in the mid-seventeenth century with the confiscation of land held by Catholics, of both Gaelic and Anglo-Norman descent, following the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. During the the mid to late 1800's 7 of their 11 children moved to Victoria, Australia except Michael, Marcella, Kate & Hanora (Nora) who stayed in Clonlara.
Note: Both Patrick Hamilton (c1841-1873) & Arthur Hamilton (c1843-1877 migrated to Australia in the 1850's to 1860's. Co-incidentally two of their uncles with the same christian names also migrated to Australia around the same time. Their uncle Patrick Hamilton (c1828-1871) was living in the Emerald Hill (now South Melbourne) area. Both Patrick's named their 1st daughter after their mothers Ellen & Marcella respectively.
