Research notes

  • Estimated year of birth:—A baptismal record has not been found. The year of birth was inferred from the age recorded on the gravestone.
  • Family and place of birth of Margaret Crowe:—Many family trees show (without supporting source references) Margaret Crowe as an emigrant from Ireland, and as the sister of Catherine Crowe, wife of Thomas Huggins’ friend, Samuel Pilkington. Having undertaken a study to determine whether this relationship existed as just described, a wide range of records have borne out that Catherine was born in Ireland, the daughter of John Maxwell Crowe and Elizabeth Young of Legarhill, county Monaghan. While there were several key points of intersection between these four parties (Thomas Huggins, Margaret Crowe, Samuel Pilkington, and Catherine Crowe), and however plausible in the circumstances the assertions of relationship may appear, proximity and plausibility do not provide genealogical proofs. The sources reviewed and analyzed to date are insufficient to identify Margaret Crowe as a member of that family. (1) For this analysis, please refer to the first link in the "Links" section, below. (2) Recommend careful review of the Church of Ireland records for the parishes of Clones, Drumsnat, and Newbliss in county Monaghan, and of the parishes in the Rev. Mr. Crowe’s charge in county Fermanagh. The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (Belfast) holds a microfilm copy, i.e., Baptisms, 1682-1873; marriages, 1682 1788 and 1792-1912; burials, 1682 1704, 1709, 1722-25, 1733-34 and 1808-1901. PRONI ref. MIC1/147, CR1/58. Please note that the Church of Ireland records for the parish of Currin, county Monaghan (the site of Crowfort, and of Scotshouse burying ground, in Cavanreagh townland), commenced with the inception of the church, in 1810.—Kilpatrick-1128 (2018-09-01)
