Biography

John Crowe was born 1887 in or near Murringo, New South Wales, his birth registered that year in Young. He was the son of Michael Crowe and Mary Crowe (nee ?). ^[1]

Military Service (1915 - 1919). ^[2]

On 24th July, 1915, when John enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Liverpool, New South Wales, he said he was 28-year-old Labourer, born 'Morengo', in the County of Burrangong, New South Wales. He gave his mother, Mary Crowe, of Marengo, as his next-of-kin.

Marengo is one of the many names for the historic village of Murringo, South West Slopes, New South Wales. ^[3]

Assigned to the 5th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion, John embarked overseas on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on 5 October, 1915. He was sent to France and was wounded (gassed) 27th July 1916. He only spent about a week in hospital before he rejoined his unit. He was promoted through the ranks to Lance sergeant (a Corporal acting as a Sergeant).

He returned to Australia 9th February, 1919, and was discharged 1st September 1919.

Marriage. In 1924, John married Nora Amy Golden, their marriage registered Cootamundra, New South Wales. ^[4]

Death. John passed away 24th April, 1969, aged 81. His death was registered Cootamundra, New South Wales. ^[5]

Burial. His remains were interred in the Cootamundra General Cemetery where his military plaque reads: ^[6]
