Parents of Amanda Melvina Crowell may be John Crowell and Mary Amos. Notes on John Crowell: He was reportedly a full-blooded German according to John Allen Crowell's Family History. Mary Tate Brooks states that the original German spelling was KRAWL. She gives no source for this information. According to "Crowl Connections", Vol 11, no. 1, March, 1995, pg. 8; this John "COULD BE a son of Henry Crowell and Rachel Smith of Pulaski Co., VA. From same source, pg. 8 "It is of interest that there are members of this family in Coffee Co., TN who intermarried with a TAYLOR family. Henry (son of Johan Heinrich Henry Crowell of 1784 will) Crowell's oldest son George W. (b. abt 1785) married Margaret Root widow TAYLOR". According to the Supplement to Crowel History (Footprints in the Sands of Time); :John, son of Henry and Rachel Crowel, had a large family; moved to Franklin County, Indiana; a year or two later to Illinois, where he died." on p. 39 it states; "...moved West about the year 1840. Family now scattered and whereabouts unknown to this writer." Gail Komar says that there is no record of this JOHN in Illinois. The writer could have been wrong about the state to which JOHN moved. Mary Tate Brooks shows this John being the son of John Crowell and Susan Dagur. However, no records show that John and Susan had a son named John. (Also, her name was DAGIN, not Dagur) There is still no documentation that he was in fact the son of Henry Crowell and Rachel Smith. The only information that can be documented is from census records which show him, and his parents, as having been born in Virginia. Anything else is speculation. Coffee County Tennessee records are very difficult to locate. Their marriage records begin in 1853. There was a fire in the Court House in 1870 which destroyed many of the marriage records."...note that a JOHN CROWLE is also on the 1830 census of Montgomery Co., VA b. 1800-1810. He also disappears after that census. Alas his census information of 1830 does not agree with the information I have on your Crowell family line. This does not rule out your John being this son of Henry." A John Crowell was listed as a son of Henry and Rachel in the book, "Footprints in the Sands of Time". There is little known about this person. It is possible that he is the husband of Mary Amos and moved to Coffee Co. TN. Gail Komar provided the following information: "...1794 the approximate birth of your ancestor John is about the year that Henry left Frederick Co., MD and traveled to Virginia. As you may know the 1800 census of Virginia was lost. Probably burned in the war of 1812 when the Capital was burned in Washington, DC... Henry appears in Botetourt County on the 1810 Census. Devault and Michael are listed in Franklin Co. As you have seen, there is no John. Instead he is on the 1810 census in Clearfield Co., PA buying land there in 1804...Henry has one son born 1794-1800 and four sons born between 1800 and 1810." JOSEPH, a son of Henry Crowell and Rachel Smith reportedly died, according to Tim Mattingly records, in Coffee Co., TN. This could make a strong case for JOHN being a brother of this Joseph. In an e.mail to me from Gail Komar 8/27/99 she states: "...We may not have absolute proof that John s/o Henry and Rachel is the man who married Mary (Polly) Amos, but no other John has presented himself to be the s/o Henry and Rachel. Barring that new information could come forward at a later date, I think we have the correct man. JAMES AMOS who I believe to be Mary's father lived near Michael and Devault in Franklin Co., VA. While there is no evidence that Henry lived in Franklin Co., it was certainly possible that his son, John may have gone to see his uncles and met the Amos family there. Michael had a son, John but he married Hannah McNeil in Franklin Co., so that rules him out. Definitely the case is circumstantial but strong." -- Family histories and Tennessee census records show him born in VA. His age is an estimate based upon his reported age at the time of census takings. Judy Wakeman shows this person as being born in NC between 1820-1825. -- This death date is an estimate based upon census records and a disposition of property involving his wife Mary after his death. These papers were filed in May of 1866, and 1877 in Coffee County, TN stating that JOHN had died prior to 1866. He does not appear in the 1860 TN census. Tim Mattingly shows his death date as "After 1840". The 1870 US Federal census shows his name listed as: Jno. Crowell. Jno. is usually considered to be an abbreviation for Jonathan. STEVE KIEFER, KIEFER69@AOL..COM, states: "John was a member of Mount Carmel Methodist Church, near Morrison, Coffee, TN. Mary is buried in the Old Henry Cunningham Cemetery in Coffee County, TN." A copy of the census image for the 1850 US Census, Coffee County, TN, 10th Civil District, page 079, shows the following information: JOHN CROWEL, AGE 56, FARMER, BORN IN VIRGINIA, MARY CROWEL, AGE 58, BORN IN VIRGINIA, LEANDER CROWEL, AGE 25, LABORER, BORN IN TENNESSEE The 1840 Federal Census for Coffee County, TN, pg 36, shows: JOHN CROWELL household with one male between 15 and 20 years old, one male between 40 and 50, two females between 10 and 15, and one female between 15 and 20.
