1901 census of Canada indicates that his date of birth is May 31, 1852, however, he was baptized in 1851.
Note that my family used the name Crowell and Crowells. William's brother James and his family used Crowells (he was baptized Crowell). Of Williams 5 children, 3 used Crowells and 2 used Crowell.

Note: William Wadge always used the name Crowell as they were all baptized as well as their father and predecessors. Brothers, Henry and James, as adults always spelled their surname as Crowells. William Wadge Crowell (my great-grandfather) had 1 daughter and 4 sons (plus one adopted). The daughter, Cecilia May, and 2 of her brothers (William Andrew and Albert) used the name Crowells, while the other 2 brothers, Harold and Francis - aka Frank (my paternal grandfather) - went by Crowell (as they felt that it should be according to my Dad - Franklin William Henry Crowell). The William Wadge "Crowells" side placed a headstone on their parents gravesite with Crowells rather than Crowell as he was baptized and used throughout life. Crowell or Crowells, we are all family!.
