Joan was the daughter of Eleazer Crowell and Anna (Winslow) Crowell of Starks, Maine. She was born in 1796 and was the widow of a John Elwell when she became the second wife of Thomas Wellman in 1825. She is the mother of Thomas' children John born in 1827, Ann Elizabeth born in 1830 and died young, and Joanna Crowell born in 1833.
