The papers show his name as James and the crossed out and replaced with "John", born at Woods Point in Victoria.

He was initially placed with the 19/22nd RFTS on March 12 1917 at Broadmeadows ranked Private.
Battalion: 9/57th.
Embarkation 21st June, 1917 to Cape Town. In Capetown he missed the boat , and was arrested on August 7 by civil police and spent fourteen days in detention. In November in Capetown he was penalised another seven days for 'drunkenness and creating a disturbance in Simons Town'. He embarked from Capetown on November 29, 1917 for the UK.
He was given an early discharge on August 18, 1918 because of "premature senility and gastritis' and returned to Australia. [2]

John states on his military records that his next of kin is his sister "Kate".Catherine (Crowley) Kercher (1880-1941) the military records also refer that he is returned to Australia in August 1918 with dementia. No further information known at this stage.
