According to his headstone, John Crozier was born in 1825. He's known to have been born at Banbridge in Northern Ireland, and came to New Zealand about 1856 with the British 65th Regiment of Foot at the time of the New Zealand Land Wars. By the time of his discharge he was Colour Sergeant in this regiment.
Once in New Zealand, John married Jane Marsh on 23rd June 1857 at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Te Henui, New Plymouth. Six years later Jane died in childbirth, leaving no issue. John was given a New Zealand Land Wars medal for his involvement with the Taranaki Militia 1860–1865.
