Elizabeth Ellen (Crozier) Ward's parents are Christopher and Elizabeth (Walker) Crozier. The grandparents of Thornton's wife, Elizabeth, were John A. Walker and Mary McCandlish. According to Crozier researchers, John and Mary sailed to America from Scotland in 1792 or 1793 with one child, Samuel. One of their children, a baby, died while crossing and was buried at sea. They landed in Pennsylvania, where the rest of the family was born. In 1816 they moved to Virginia, then in 1820 to Ross County, Ohio, and from there, the young Walkers went to Iowa. According to Darlene Gleason, a Crozier-Ward descendant in Iowa, Mary McCandlish is a cousin of Scottish poet, Robert Burns, who wrote "Auld Lang Syne."

A daughter of John and Mary Walker, Elizabeth E. "Betsy" Walker was born August 14, 1792 in Pennsylvania. She married Christopher Crozier, March 29, 1821 in Ross Co, OH. Christopher Crozier was the son of James Crozier from County Tyrone, Ireland.
