Alexander Cruden was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on 31 May 1699 and was christened on 8 June 1699 at St. Nicholas Kirk, Aberdeen. He was the son of William Cruden and Isobell Pyper[1].

He moved to London after a romance ended badly. leading him to develop mental health issues which persisted through his life.
He set up a book shop at the Royal Exchange, London. In 1735 he was included in a advertisement for books, as
Mr Alex Cruden, Bookseller to her Majesty, at the Bible and Anchor, Royal Exchange, Cornhill[2]
While running the bookshop, he was able to work on compiling his concordance, which was published in 1737.
He died on 1 November 1770 in Camden Passage, Islington, Middlesex, England, and never married.
