On 11th November 1939 Robert was commissioned in the Second Australian Imperial Force for military service during the Second World War. He was a Major in the 2/31st Australian Infantry Battalion, 7th Division. [1]
Robert married Shirley Campbell in early 1940 in Victoria, before deploying to the Middle East. [2]
He was killed in action in Syria on 11th June 1941, five days before turning 28 years of age. Robert Maynard Cruickshank's name is located at panel 59 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. He is buried in the Beirut War Cemetery, Beirut, Lebanon. [3] Following the war, Shirley was issued his campaign and service medals: 1939-1945 Star, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.
