Lillian May (Crump) Bassett was born on April 5, 1884 in Barkers Rd, Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia, the daughter of Theophilus Crump (1853 - 1930), Brickmaker and [[Dutton-538|Catherine Dutton] (1857 - 1941).[1]
She was the third child of eight children, her siblings were:
Lillian married Thomas Manderson (1877 - 1938) on May 7, 1903 in Bendigo, Victoria. Lillian was only 19 years of age, Thomas was six years her senior.[2] The couple’s whereabouts after their marriage is not known. It is quite possible that Thomas took his new bride back to his usual place of residence in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. [3]
Lillian then seems to have returned to Victoria by the beginning of 1906 as she gave birth to her first child, Doris Lillian Crump/Bassett on 25 February 1906 in Eaglehawk, Victoria, Australia.[4] By March 1906 a “Missing Persons notice” is placed in the Western Australian Gazette. [5], [6] Three months later there is a mention of Thomas MANDERSON in the MISSING FRIENDS Column of The Daily News
"Thomas Manderson, found at Goomalling, near Newcastle".[7], [8]
It appears that Thomas and Lillian did not live together after the birth of Lillian's first child, however, it is not known when she returned to Victoria, was it to have the baby or had she returned much earlier leaving Thomas behind. Almost a year later in 1907, Thomas left Australia. He can be found as part of the crew of the "Empress of Britain" in Quebec, Canada after being having been part of an earlier crew on the "Everton Grange".[9] Thomas eventually dies in 1938 Sonoma County. Hospital having worked as a farm labourer for 30 years.[10]
After returning to Victoria, Lillian forms an attachment to William Bassett (1878 - 1945).
The couple never marries however, in the second half of 1907 the couple and their two children travelled to Tasmania with Lillian’s sister Ada and her husband Sidney Bone to work at the Adelaide Mine in Dundas. [11] The couple had their third child William and after two years they moved back to Victoria. [12]
When the couple returns to Eaglehawk after living in Tasmania for two years everyone thought that William and Lillian had got married in Tasmania.
After returning from Tasmania the couple can be found living at the following addresses:
