Biography

Mary Jane Crump, was born abt 1620-1623, location unknown, she died between 1656 and 1659 in Virginia. Mary Jane Crump married Robert Harris.

Mr. Peter Wilson Coldham listed the following administration in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury:

Harris alias Crump, Mary (Jane in margin), of Virginia. Administration to daughter Martha, wife of John Jennings (June 1656)[1]

Robert Harris and Mary Jane Crump's children

  1. Martha Harris, who married John Jennings (John died abt 1677, he was involved in Bacon's Rebellion)
  2. Mary Harris, who married 1st, Anthony Spiltimber (in 1665, they sued John Jennings, who had taken control of Robert's estate in 1659.). She married 2nd, Matthew Swann (1620-1702).

Research Notes

"Jennings v Crumpe. Plaintiffs: John Jennings and Martha Jennings his wife..."[2] In 1656 John and Martha Jennings were involved in a land dispute with John Crumpe, Richard Crumpe, Nathaniel Saunders, Thomas Saunders and Mary Wyst, concerning property in Rodley, and Westbury, Gloucestershire. Question: Is John and Richard Crumpe related to Martha's mother: Mary Jane Crump?

NOTE: Birth date of 1623 is a guess, based on husband's 1615 birth.

Comment posted by Tom King on Martha's profile:
"This Martha Harris was actually the daughter of Robert Harris d1659 and Mary Jane Crump, who had married the Isle of Wight County Clerk John Jennings who had taken control of the Robert Harris estate in 1659 as the husband of the deceased daughter Martha Harris. The other daughter Mary Harris later married Anthony Spilltimber and they sued John Jennings in 1665 for their share of the estate of the deceased Robert Harris and that of the deceased Martha Harris Jennings. There is a 2001 book by John Brayton on The Descendants of Capt John Jennings that cites that all of his children were by his 2nd wife and not Martha Harris. Since she did not have any children, any DNA reference to her in an Ancestry autosomal test is taken from incorrect Ancestral trees, not from any scientific analysis."[3]
The WikiTree profile Crump-939 was created from the profile for Judith UNKNOWN-55314, who had been attached as the wife of Robert Harris. The profile Unknown-55314 had been created through the import of LaBach Family TreeApril28_2011.ged on 05 May 2011. It included the user ID: 568B65BCAB264161B3C4B2D27B64EEADEA0B. An estimated birth date of 1623 was added in December 2014 based on Robert Harris's birth (1615). That estimate still holds. In December 2016, based on information from Tom King (Harris DNA, Group 4 researcher), Judith was changed to Mary Jane Crump, only known wife of Robert, whose only known children were Martha (Harris) Jennings and Mary (Harris) Spiltimber.
Robert (imported by the same gedcom) was born 1615; immigrated to "James Cittie", Virginia; and died before 1655. Children attached were Thomas, Martha, and Mary.

ah. see page 213 of this Google book (Boddie).

1663, Anthony & Mary Spilltimber of Surry (formerly of Isle of Wight) sell 250 acres in Lawne's Creek. In 1668, the land is subject to a lawsuit. Jennings wife Martha had, in 1659, deeded her father's land to John. The court ruled in favor of John.

I had the impression from one of Tom's notes that Martha died before her father. But not only was she probably living, but if her profile's birth year of 1644 is correct, her father probably named John Jennings as her & Martha's guardian (Mary's birth shows as 1645).

Tom mentions a 1665 lawsuit & their ages explain the delay (from 1659 to 1665).

When Martha and John were married, and when Martha died needs to be researched.
