Biography

Modesta was born 20 Feb 1874^[1] and died of a stroke in Yorktown, DeWitt County, Texas on 08 Jan 1924.^[2] The daughter of Jose Sisto Cruz^[2] who on 28 Mar 1824 was christened at La Inmaculada Concepcion in Jaumave, Tamaulipas, Mexico and Concepcion DeLaija of Taumalipas, Mexico Modesta was married to Jesus Cruz who preceded her in death and is buried along with a child who died young in the Gonzales family cemetery (unmarked graves). In 1850 her parents are living in Santander Jiménez, Tamaulipas, México. By 1861 they have migrated north to Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico across the US/Mexico border from Brownsville, TX where we find them on the 1870 census which notes all their children as born in Mexico except 8 month old Eduardo-their first Texas born child. Following Eduardo, Modesta and her younger sister Gudalupe were also born in Cameron County, Texas.^[3][4]

Her brothers Domingoa Cruz & Enestor Cruz are buried in Santa Rosalia Cemetery in Brownsville, TX.
