Biography

Daughter of John Watson and Amanda Elizabeth (Huddleston) Cull.

Dorothy Jane Cull Berry completed her life adventure Monday, August 7, 2006, in her home surrounded by the things she loved: her daughter, the family Yorkshire "terrorists", companions, photos and memories of her eighty-eight years of life. Dorothy, "Dot" was born in Rover, Missouri on February 5, 1918. She was the youngest child of John Watson Cull and Amanda Elizabeth Huddleston Cull of Cull, Missouri. The family and their five children moved to the oil fields of Oklahoma and the tiny "Boom Town" of Wynona when Dot was a toddler. Dot went to Wynona High School where she met and married her high school sweetheart and best friend, Doyle Dennis Berry. Dot, Doyle, and their daughter followed whatever work was available during the Depression and there was joy even when there was little money.

In the late 1930s the family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas and remained there all their lives. The onset of WWII saw Dot active in civic duties where she served her country as "Rosie the Riveter" and went on to become a top-rated aircraft mechanic at NAS Corpus Christi." Mama" Dot loved her family and she loved her grandsons best of all. She was a very young grandmother so much time and energy was available to enjoy traveling, camping, hunting, and fishing. She enjoyed many long trips to state parks and following her grandsons on their rugby tours during their university years. Her delight was to have a group of young men and women cooking around the barbeque in a park after a rugby tournament. Her other delight was a backyard full of fruit trees, honeybees and turtles (the latter starting with a single box turtle rescued from the highway). Her adventure was a good one. Celebrate!

Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle; her parents John and Amanda; brothers, Rayburn, George, James, and sister, Cecile. Dot is survived by her daughter Jimi Su Berry Cline; two grandsons and their wives, and great-grandchildren, and her faithful companions and loving protectors "Mandy" and "Lexi". Sincere gratitude to all those who shared her battle against cancer: Dr. Melanie Thomas (MD Anderson), Dr. Edwin Ben Groner, Alicia Perez and family who were a part of our family for many years, Anna Robinson, and long time friend, Mary Garcia and her staff.

A memorial service will be held on August 12, 2006 at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.
