Biography

Martin Culp, or KALB, was born 28 Dec 1814 and was baptized 21 Nov 1827 by William Weinel of the German Reformed Church of Westmoreland and So Armstrong Counties, PA. His parents were listed in that record as Philip KALB and Elisabeth. His siblings baptism were also recorded; Maria b 3 Nov 1817 and Johannes b 20 May 1820. All three were baptized the same date. There is also an Anna Maria b 3 Feb 1805, bpt 16 Nov 1828 as an adult, parents ____Kalb and ?

Martin's brother Johannes "John", also lived in the same area of Crawford Co, IL that Martin did, dying there in 1904. It is not known at this time what became of the girls Anna and Maria, nor if there were more children born to Philip and Elisabeth.

Martin married Rachael Leona Nichols/Nicol/Nicholas, c 1839, probably in Licking County, Ohio based on the birth of their first child, Samuel Josiah Culp in 1840. Licking County courthouse fire April 1875 destroyed many early records. So far, nothing is known of Rachael's parents either, looking primarily in Richland County and Licking County.

Martin and Rachael had at least 11 children:

Samuel Josiah Culp (1840-1864) who married Christine Noblett

Elizabeth Culp (1842-1911) married Karl Charles Kolter/Coulter

John Wesley Culp (1844-1916) married Clara Unknown

Mariah Culp (1846-1926) who married Jacob Miley

Philip Culp (c 1848-aft 1860) There is a burial for a Philip Culp in Kirk Cemetery, however no dates, no headstone.

Jacob T Culp (1850-1909) who married Catherine Louisa Smith

Mary E "Polly" Culp (c1851- aft 1870) no dates but buried Row AA, plot 27 Kirk Cemetery, Robinson, Crawford County, IL.

Rachel "Ann" Culp (1852- aft 1870) no dates but buried Row AA plot 27 Kirk Cemetery, Robinson, Crawford Co, IL.

Catherine Culp (1857-1893) who married Henry Coulter

Martin Sylvester Culp (1858- 1927) who married Jenella "Nellie" Sweet

Charles M Culp (1858-1863) Buried Kirk Cemetery, Robinson, Crawford County, Illinois.

The sexton book, the "old book", has burials noted for both Martin and Rachael, no dates, no headstones but row EE, plot 43 and 44. For death dates, the best reference we have so far is the 26 June 1900 census, Crawford Co, IL where Rachael is already gone and Martin is 85 years old, widowed and in the poor farm. I have not been able to procure a death certificate for either of them, none on file with Crawford County.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Martin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Martin:

I've added the Martin Culp lineage to the Culp Name Study (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Culp_Name_Study) as lineage number ten. Connecting this lineage to any one of the others (or proving it is unrelated to the others) will probably require some Y-DNA testing.

I am descended from this Martin and would like to be on the trusted list. I also want to merge culp-1950 and 485.
