Private William Culver served for Delaware in the War of 1812
Service started:
Unit(s): Captain Waller's Company, 8th Co. 9th Reg
Service ended:

William J. Culver was born about 1768 in Sussex County, Delaware. He married Grace Hastings (1773-1838) about 1793 in Delaware, and they had 12 children together.

Their children were:

  1. Joshua Culver
  2. George Culver b. ~1796 (died young)
  3. John Culver b. ~1798
  4. Isabel Culver b. ~1800
  5. Salathael Culver b.~1802
  6. J. Daniel Culver b. ~1805
  7. Ester Culver b. ~1807
  8. Elias Culver b. ~1809
  9. Annie Amelia Culver
  10. Nellie Culver b. ~1813
  11. Lydia Culver b. ~1815
  12. Charles Nutter Culver

He died some time after 13 Apr 1839 when he signed his name and sold property to his son Salathael and before the 1840 census.

William inherited land from his father in 1782, and added 15 acres called Chance, before he surveyed it on 12 Nov 1802. He farmed near Delmar, DE all his life.

"a minor when his father died and chose his brother Geo, as his guardian in 1782. George was probably his own brother and the older brothers may have been his half-brothers.[1] (I think Spillers meant only full brother-J.Culver)

William was listed in the 1790 census for Little Creek Hundred, Sussex Co., DE

In 1794/5 William was engaged in lawsuits with Nathaniel Waller and Alexander Collins.

Served in the DE Militia in 1808[2] and during the War of 1812. Private in Capt Waller's Co, 9th Reg,[3] during the bombardment of Lewes, ED, in March 1813, by a British Frigate.

In 1836, William deeded 21 acres to Isaac Hastings, and in 1839 sold the other 33 < acres to is son Salathael.

His wife Grace Hastings Culver was living in 1836, but did not sign the deed when William sold land to their son Salathael on 13 Apr 1839, so apparently Grace died prior to that time.
