Biography

Reuben was born in 1798, the son of Reuben Culver and his wife, Olive Buell, who emigrated from Litchfield, Connecticutt in 1796 to Waterford, Ohio. According to a biographical sketch of his life in "Emminent Americans," published prior to the US Civil War, Dr. Reuben Culver studied law, medicine and surgery in Charlestown, Virginia (now West Virginia) and settled in Logan, Ohio, where he became the first president of Logan Branch, the State Bank of Ohio. He married Hannah Dillon Brooke in 1827 ^[1]and had three sons and one daughter. In 1834 the Ohio legislature appointed him Associate Judge of Hocking County, which office he held until it was abolished. Dr. Reuben Culver was the leading physician and surgeon of Hocking County until his death. He passed away in 1861.
