Biography

Elizabeth Cumerford was born 01 Sep 1871 at Smellie’s Land in Wishaw, the daughter of Hugh Cummerford and Elizabeth Calderhead[1]. In the 1881 census, Elizabeth is with her parents and siblings James, Jane, Isabella, Hugh, Marion, Agnes and Mary at 51 Tylefield St in Glasgow. In the 1891 census, Elizabeth, a Mill Worker, is with her parents and siblings Marion, Agnes and Mary at 29 Queen Mary St in Bridgeton Glasgow.

On 31 Dec 1891, Elizabeth, age 20, a Carpet Factory worker, married Walter Miller, a 23 year old Carpet Weaver. They both lived on Queen Mary St, she at No. 29 and he at No. 23. They married at Dennistoun, and the witnesses were David Jack and Marion Cumberford. In the 1901 census, Walter and Elizabeth are at North Rd, Calderhead Place, in Bellshill with their children John, Elizabeth, Hugh, and Jeannie. Also with them is Elizabeth'’s sister Agnes Cumberford. In the 1911 census, at 49 North Rd, Walter and Lizzie are with their children John, Lizzie, Hugh, Jeannie, Agnes and Annie. In the 1921 census, Walter 52, an Egg Merchant, and his wife Elizabeth 49 are still living at 49 North Rd in Bellshill with their children Jean 21, Agnes 17, Annie 12 and grandson John Courtney age 4 son to their deceased daughter Elizabeth. Living a couple households away, at the same address, is Jean Cochrane Cumberford, Step Mother and second wife to Elizabeth's father Hugh.

Elizabeth and Walter Ruff Miller had at least 6 children. Elizabeth died 13 Aug 1930 at 42 Langside Dr in View Park. She had pneumonia for 5 days. The death informant was her son, from 24 Nile Grove in Edinburgh.
