Biography

Louisa Cummings was born in Kentucky in January 1823.^[1] She was the daughter of Matthew Cummings and Martha Askren, and is identified as one of the children of Martha Askren in the powers of attorney issued in connection with the probate of her grandfather John Askren's will.^[2] The exact location of her birth was most likely Franklin County, Kentucky, where her father Matthew and family appear in 1820.^[3]

In about 1828 -- after her sister Elizabeth was born in Jan 1828^[4] -- the extended Cummings family migrated west to Owen County, Indiana, where the family appears in 1830.^[5]

She married Samuel P. Mason in Owen County, Indiana, on May 26, 1842.^[6] This family appears in Lafayette, Owen County, Indiana, along with their first three children, in 1850, living near the family of her sister Marilda Nation.^[7] By 1860, the family had migrated to Madison township, Johnson County, Missouri, where Louisa's father Matthew and brothers William and Sanford had begun settling in the early 1850s.^[8] Louisa and Samuel Mason raised a family of at least eight children together between 1844-1870.^[7][8][9]

Samuel died after 1880 and before 1900, when Louisa appears as the widowed head of her household, living near Kansas City in Cass County, Missouri.^[1] The exact date of her death is uncertain, but she appears to have died in about 1905, most likely in Cass County.

Research Notes

Some sources, including the Lorna Mullins genealogy, claim that her birth date was January 24, 1824; however, no sources for this date are cited and these researchers appear to be confusing this Louisa Mason with a different Louisa Mason (nee Rhea), who married a David Mason and died in Pike County, Indiana, in 1910. See FindaGrave memorial 118582276.

The 1905 death date in this profile is a rough estimate based on the fact that she was still living in 1900, but apparently died before 1910 as she does not appear in the 1910 census or in the Missouri Death Certificates, 1910-1966 online database.
