Nettie "Muddie" Cummins was born in La Salle, Illinois in 1873, second eldest of four children to Erwin P. and Emmaline (Nodine) Cummins. Sadly, her brothers and sister died very young leaving her an only child. She spent her first years with her family in Wenona before moving to Carlisle, Lonoke, Arkansas. After a few years, her grandparents remained in Carlisle while she and her parents removed to Hot Springs, Arkansas. She was introduced to Robert H. Lower, a local druggist, by mutual friends and married him in 1891. They lived for a time with her parents at Silver and Pleasant streets before her husband built a new house at 202 Silver. Her daughter, Aline, was born in 1893 and Frances was born in 1904. It's unknown who gave her her nickname but is presumed to be her parents and referred to mudbugs, crawfish. She was of the Christian faith but also a student of spiritualism, a popular movement at the time. Her husband preceded her in death in 1929. Nettie passed away at the home of her eldest daughter in Little Rock in 1935.
