1860 Federal Census, Ritchie County, Virginia

Jacob and his wife Lucinda are living in Ritchie County when the census was enumerated in 1860. Jacob is listed as supporting his family as a farmer and a miller. He owns his own farm and residence valued at $417 while the real estate is valued at $1,200. These values place him about upper middle when compared to his neighbors. His oldest daughter, Sarah, is listed as being near-sighted without the ability to ear or speak. Life would have been very difficult for Sarah to have these disabilities during this time. Erasmus, Joseph and Amus are listed as having attended school during that year.

1870 Federal Census, Ritchie County, West Virginia

Jacob is not listed as having a value for owning any real estate, which is a change from the previous census enumerations. His father is no longer listed as living close to him. Jacob is listed as supporting his family as a Miller and farmer is not listed for an occupation.
