On the 1881 census, William, aged 2 years, is living on Newfieldyke Thorn Row, Slamannan, with his parents and brother: James (4 months).[2]
On the 1891 census, William, aged 12 years, is living at Binniehill, Slamannan, with his parents and siblings: James (10 years), Robert (7 years), Jane (7 years), Alex (4 years) and Annie (1 year). Alexander and Annie both died of measles within days of each other in 1893.[3]
William married Elizabeth Bonner on 20 May 1897 in the parish of Dalziel, Lanarkshire, and they had six children.[4]

On the 1901 census, William, a coal miner, and Elizabeth are living at 155 Watsonville, Dalziel, Lanarkshire, with their daughter, Annie, who is under 1 month. The couple's oldest daughter, Margaret, died in infancy. They would also lose their daughters, Elizabeth and Jane in infancy.[5]
On 19 November 1912, William applied for poor relief from Dalziel Parish as a partial debility had prevented him from working and he was granted 5 shillings. Further comments reveal he was granted 8 shillings per week from Paisley Parish from 4 February 1914 but he started working the following week.[6]
William Laird Cupples died of bronchitis, aged 67 years, on 24 October 1945.[7]
