Biography

Bahamas Project
Richard Curry is part of a Bahamian family.

RICHARD CURRY of RUSSELL ISLAND and HARBOUR ISLAND

Richard CURRY & Jemima GIBBONS "of Harbour Island" married 7 June 1762 at Christ Church, Nassau, Bahamas.

They had children: Frances/Fanny Curry Albury; Amelia Curry Roberts; Martha Curry Sawyer; Mary Curry Roberts; Rhoda Curry; Richard Curry; Sarah Curry Russell; and Susannah Curry (who married Mr. McKenzie).

George III, for 1/4 penny per acre annual quit rent, granted to Richard Curry 178 acres on Russell Island 30 June 1789.

George III for 2/6 annual quit rent, granted Richard Curry lots 36 and 128 in Dunmore Town.

John Murray, Earl of Dunmore, Governor of the Bahamas appointed Richard Curry and others "our Justices to the Peace, 17 October 1791.."

Richard Curry died before 1809. Will written 24 March 1800 and proved 7 June 1809.

RESEARCH NOTE: A Richard Curry was also born to John and Mary Martha Curry in February 1742/43. The two Richards were born to brothers residing in Harbour Island. Was Richard, son of John Curry, the Richard Curry that married JEMIMA GIBBONS? Did Richard Curry, son of Richard and Mary, marry SARAH SANDS? Looking for clues.

RESEARCH NOTE: Should Howell Curry be added as a son of this Richard Curry? Although he was not mentioned in his father's will. Perhaps he was a son of Richard and Sarah Sands Curry. Who is HOWELL CURRY? Who did he marry? Who are his ancestors? Looking for clues.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:

Hi Deborah:

Records in the Bahamas (at Christ Church) prove that there were many Currys in the Bahamas for generations before the American Revolution. They were "Old Inhabitants" - named John, Richard, Joseph and Benjamin Curry.

Colonel Joseph Curry moved to the British American colonies from Glasgow, Scotland, sometime in the year 1750. He married a Jane (Walker) Curry, also from Scotland. Joseph and Jane had six sons, Joseph, John, Richard, Benjamin, William and Stephen Curry.

Patriarch Joseph never made it to the Bahamas; he died during the American Revolution. Joseph’s wife Jane Curry and the youngest son Stephen stayed in South Carolina. It is my understanding that all Curry's in the Bahamas are descendants of five Scottish Loyalist brothers who moved to the Bahamas.

The ancestry of the Curry family in the Bahamas continues to challenge genealogists. With this tree, I am hoping we can untangle some of our confusion by restoring the early 18th century Bahamian Currys to the family tree. (As you know, Harllee, in his epic genealogy "Kinfolks", believed that the Curry families in the islands today all descend from Loyalist brothers who emigrated from the southern US in the 1780s. A premise that has not been proved with primary data.)

Richard Curry married Jemima Gibbons in the Bahamas. He was the son of a Bahamian-born Curry.
