John Curry: born 1821 County Mayo, Ireland.
Emigrated from Liverpool, England on the Euxine and arrived in NY on May 27, 1848. He traveled “Steerage.” By 1855 he was living with his wife Catherine in Hassan, Minn.
Aug 1, 1861, John was transferred land from Josiah McFerson that McFerson had received from a Warrant given him by the US due to his service in the War of 1812.
The 1870 census says he cannot read or write.
1892 Jun 17 death in Kalispell, Flathead, Montana. Death location source: Probate Court file from Hennepin County, Minn. Cause of death listed as railroad accident out west.
He was also known as Jack.
May have been born in Tobercurry, Ireland.
Buried Old St. Thomas Cemetery, Corcoran, MN.
U.S. Bureau of Land Management online records has the original land patent (1861) claim of 160 acres as follows: “The East ½ of the North East ¼ of Section 30, and the West ½ of the North-West ¼ of Section 29. I have a google Earth image of the property. Only ½ of original claim is within the Crow-Hassan Park reserve boundaries. The other ½ of the property (everything east of Park Drive, which bisects the property along the old section line) is still in private ownership. Currently today, there is an existing hiking/horseback riding trail that passes through the former Curry property. I have a copy of the park map.
