Full Military Honor Accorded G.A.R. Veteran
Ranks of Eau Claire Civil War Vets Again Broken by Death of George Curtis
Once again the Grim Reaper has entered the fast diminishing ranks of the Eau Claire veterans of the Civil War and claimed the life of George Curtis, 86, well known farmer of this community. Comrade Curtis died Friday night at Pawating hospital in Niles where he had been taken for treatment for injuries received in a fall a few days previous, at the home of his grandson, Mac Curtis, with whom he resided.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Franklin church with burial in the adjoining cemetery, full military rites being conducted by the Eau Claire American Legion Post. Rev. A. A. Allington of the Eau Claire Community church officiated at the services.
The passing of Comrade Curtis leaves but two of the "boys who wore the blue" in Eau Claire - Ben Wynn and George Sharpe, both of whom are in reasonably good health.
George Curtis, a son of Benjamin and Lucretia Curtis, was born February 20, 1845, on a farm adjacent to the Franklin church and cemetery and passed away at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 13 days.
He enlisted in Co. B 9th Regiment Michigan Infantry, October 4, 1864, and served in the ranks at Nashville, Murfreeboro and Stone River, Tenn., and Fitzgerald, Ga., until the close of the war, receiving his discharge Sept. 15, 1865.
After his return from the war he was united in marriage with Miss Susan Moore of Silver Creek township and to this union four sons were born, Arlie, Earl, Virgil and Lloyd. Arlie and Earl preceded him in death, Virgil now resides at Larnard, Kans., and Lloyd at Dowagiac. Besides the two sons, he leaves one sister, who has passed her ninetieth milestone. Mrs. Josephine Wells, of Pokagon, three grandsons, one granddaughter, and ten great grandchildren.
Deceased has spent his entire life in Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties and for the past eleven years has made his home with Mac B. Curtis of Eau Claire. Although afflicted with infirmities peculiar to old age and nearly blind, he ever tood a keen interest in the lives of the younger people about him and the last week of his life was cheered and brightened by a visit from his grandson Ceo of Detroit.
Another chapter in the book of life is closed and the mortal remains of George Curtis rest in Mother Earth where oft his childish footsteps roamed the virgin forests.

Dennis and I visited Franklin Cemetery, Berrien Township, Berrien county, Michigan.
«b»«i»Stones of Benjamin and Lucretia Avaril Curtis.
«/b»«/i»Dennis Camp and Barbara Milman visited Franklin Cemetery and viewed the stones. The stones were of a newer type, not the late 1800 type. Their son Dewitt Curtis died in 1917 and I surmise that the old stones were replaced then. All three have identical stones.
Franklin Cemetery in Berrien County is at the intersection of Frost and Franklin Streets.
