Biography

Richard Curtis immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Richard Curtis was a son of Thomas Curtis and his wife Richarden, whose last name at birth is not known. In the Stone-Gregg Genealogy, Alice Crane Wililams estimated that he was born about 1625, probably in Ashe, Kent, England.[1]

His father Thomas Curtis died in 1631. Richarden remarried, and the family emigrated to New England by 1638, settling in Scituate in the Plymouth Colony. Richard Curtis removed to Marblehead in 1648, but returned to Scituate in 1649. [2]

Richard Curtis was an early resident of Scituate, Massachusetts, in Plymouth Colony[3]. A Richard Curtis had lands in Marblehead in 1648[4][3], but went to Scituate in 1649[4][3]. It is believed that he may have been earlier in Scituate, with brothers John, Thomas and William.[3]

Richard was on a list of men able to bear arms in the Plymouth Colony in 1643[5] and he took the oath of fidelity between 1633 and 1668[5]. He was surveyor of highways in 1650 and 1671[6] He became a freeman 1 June 1658[6]. All of which made him eligible for, and on the list of "allowed and approved inhabitants" in 1673[5].

In 1649, he married Ann, daughter of John Hallet. They had at least four children.[4][3] Ann died before 30 August 1669. The will of Ann's father John Hallett, written on that date, listed as heirs his wife Anne, his grandchildren Hannah, John, Thomas, Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, and Deborah Curtice, and his son-in-law Richard Curtice.[7]

Richard married a woman named Lydia (last name not known) as his second wife.[2][3]. She is provided for in his will.

Please attach his son Thomas Curtis if you agree. It is kind of controversial as to who he married, Mary Cocke, daughter of William Cocke (many online trees have her LNAB as Cook), however, the sources attached to him and his wife should clear that up. Thanks.

Note probably not the Richard Curtis, witness to the guardianship deed. There is no evidence this Richard was in Southold.
