Biography

Pickels Cushing, Jr. was born in Scituate, Massachusetts Bay Colony on Mary 20, 1769. [1] He was the third son of Pickels Cushing and Abigail Hatch Cushing.

On January 10, 1792 Pickels Jr., age 22, married his first cousin, 19 year old Ruth Cushing. [2] Ruth was the daughter of Pickles Sr.'s brother, Hawke.

He had a commission as Ensign that bears the autograph of John Hancock, and is dated 5 July, 1792. [3]

Ruth and Pickels had three children: William, Roland and Ruth Thomas Cushing. In the 1800 U.S. Census the family was enumerated in Hanover, Massachusetts. It shows Pickels and Ruth and two sons and one daughter. All the children were under ten years old.[4]

Ruth died in about January 1801. Her death notice appeared in the Columbian Centinel" on January 24, 1801 "Mrs. Ruth Cushing, wife of Pickels Cushing, d. in Scituate, aged 28 yrs."[5]

An intention to marry was published on January 2, 1802 for Pickels Cushing, Jr. and Rachel Cushing, both of Scituate. They were married on January 24, 1802 in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts. [6] [7] Rachel and Pickels, Jr. were first cousins. Rachel's father, George Sr. was the elder brother of Pickels Jr.'s father, Pickels Sr. Pickels was a widower with three children. Rachel was also a first cousin of his first wife. Their fathers: Pickels Sr., George, and Hawk were brothers.

Rachel's father, George Cushing, Sr., died on September 4, 1814 and his bequest to Rachel stated "to my daughter Rachel Cushing, one hundred and twenty dollars", [8]

In the 1810 U.S. Census the family was enumerated in Scituate. [9] There were two sons and four daughters in the family.

In the 1820 U. S. Census the family was in Scituate. [10] Pickels was engaged in agriculture. There was one son under ten and five daughters in the household.

In the 1830 U. S. Census the family was still in Scituate. [11] Pickels was over sixty (61) and the only male in the household. There were five daughters.

In the 1840 U. S. Census the family remained in Scituate. [12] Pickels was over seventy and there were no other adult males in the family but the record indicates one person was involved in agriculture. There was a male under five and one between five and nine. These were likely the children of his daughter, Harriet Litchfield, who had died in 1838. Rachel was listed between fifty and fifty-nine. There were two other grown daughters in the household.

Pickels wrote a will on June 4, 1841 in Scituate. [13] At that time all three of his sons had died. The only one who had offspring was (I believe) William, who left a son William. There were five living daughters,; Ruth Dill, Mary Cushing, Julia Messenger, Eliza Barker, and Lydia H (or K). Cushing and three grandchildren. The grandchildren were William Cushing, the son of William and the children of Harriett: Albert C. Litchfield, and George W. Litchfield. He named Rachel as the executrix of the estate and left to her the use of the estate for the remainder of her life. After her death Mary, who had not married, was to receive fifty percent of the estate including the house and a barn. The other half was to be divided into seven parts with each of the five daughters receiving one share. The last two sevenths was to be divided equally between the three grandchildren.

Pickels Cushing, Junior died on April 21, 1842 in Hanson, Plymouth, Massachusetts. [14]
