Tech Sergeant Earnest Cutshall was a Prisoner of War after his B-24 bomber was shot down on a mission to Wiener-Neustadt, Austria during World War II.
Earnest was born 16 September 1919 in Marshall, North Carolina. He was the son of Fred Cutshall and Eugene Freshour.[1]
Earnest was a waist gunner on the B-24 Liberator bomber, Mister Five by Five - #41-24234-U, participating in Operation Tidal Wave the low-level attack on the Romanian oil refineries at Ploesti on 1 August 1943. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for the mission.
Earnest was a waist gunner on the B-24 Liberator bomber 42-72788 that crashed when attacked by enemy fighters on a mission to Wiener-Neustadt, Austria on 1 October 1943. He was captured and became a Prisoner of War in Stalag 17B Braunau Gneikendorf Near Krems Austria.[2][3]
He married Myrtle Katherine Melton on 9 January 1959 in Buncombe County, North Carolina.[4]
He passed away 17 December 1992 in Asheville, North Carolina.[5][6]
