Born in 1545 John Cutts was the eldest son of Sir John Cutts of Childerley and Horham Hall and his wife, Sybil Hynde, daughter of (Sir) John Hynde Hyndet of Madingley, Cambridgeshire. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge 1561 and at Gray's Inn 1565.

His first wife was Anne Darcy, daughter of Sir Arthur Darcy of Huntingdonshire by whom he had 1 son and 2 daughters. His second was Margaret Brocket daughter and co-heiress of John Brocket of Brocket Hall, [1] Hertfordshire by whom he had 1 son. He succeeded his father in 1556. John was knighted by the Earl of Leicester in 1571.

John was first returned to Parliament as member for Cambridgeshire in 1584.

He died before 29 April 1615 when administration of his estate was granted.
