Unclear whether Mathias was related to Johannis and Wilhelm who were most likely the first "Syphers" to arrive in America (both 1726). Mathias seems to have been born in same part of Europe but more than 50 years later. It is not clear when Mathias came to America, though I have not come across any records indicating the presence of his parents. This profile says he was married 1785. Perhaps he arrived in America as a young man and it appears he served Pennsylvania in the Revolutionary war so he probably came in the 1770's. It may be important for family history searchers to differentiate between the families of Mathias and the brothers Johannis and Wilhelm who predominantly lived in New York State in the 18th Century. Mathias had a large family and left a sizable footprint, but there were many descendants of the two brothers born in America before the Revolutionary war. See profiles Sypher-34 and Sypher-16 . The spelling "Cypher" is most likely an Americanisation of the English spelling Sypher or Germanic Seypher. Spelling was a big issue before the Revolutionary war, as the American "colonies" recorded births and marriages in many languages and literacy levels were very low.
