Biography

Laurent was born about 1752 in Acadie. He was the son of Pierre Cyr and Magdeleine Poirier.

On 14 Aug 1763 Pierre Sire and his wife and children were enumerated living in the Colony of Massachusetts, having been deported from Acadie by the British. [1]

After the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, the Acadians detained in the Anglo-American colonies were finally free to leave. Some decided to remain where they were but the majority headed toward Québec, the Antilles, Acadia, France, Saint- Pierre-et-Miquelon and Louisiana. The Cyr family chose to settle in the French territory of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, off the coast of Newfoundland. According to Bona Arsenault, they reached Miquelon in 1763. [2] They appeared on a census in Saint-Pierre et Miquelon in 1767. [3]

In early October 1767, Acadians on Saint-Pierre et Miquelon were expelled on the order of Louis XV because of the overpopulation of the islands.[4] Most were sent to France.

On November 13, 1767, Pierre Cyr, Madeleine Poirier, his wife and their children: Charles, Rosalie, Laurent, Victoire and Pierre Cyre arrived at St. Malo from St. Pierre and Miquelon on the Schooner, La Creole. [5] The following year, France permitted Acadians to return to the islands. On March 16, 1768, they returned to St. Pierre and Miquelon on the same ship.

In 1778, the islands of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon were attacked by the British because of France’s support for the American War of Independence. The homes were destroyed, and all of the residents were deported by the British to France. [6]

On November 6, 1778, Pierre Cyr, Madeleine Poirier, his wife and their children: Charles, Laurent, Victoire and Pierre Cyr arrived at St. Malo from St. Pierre and Miquelon on the Brigantine, La Jeannette.[7]

By 1784, Laurent was back in Miquelon where he married Marie Vigneau on 7 November 1784. [8]

By 1790 they had settled in the Province of Québec where their daughter Marie Modeste was born.[9]

Research Notes

This date and location for marriage was noted in this profile: 1778-02-20 in Leicester, Worcester, Massachusetts. The source for this information appears to be the website Nos Origines https://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/GenealogieQuebec.aspx?genealogie=Cyr_Laurent&pid=19216. No source is given. It is added that the marriage was revalidated in Miquelon in 1784.

This date is highly unlikely. The family left Massachusetts for Miquelon in 1763.

In the Marcel Walter Landry website, there is no mention of a marriage in Massachusetts in 1778.

PRDH indicates a marriage before 1787, no location given, with a first child, Hélène-Madeleine, born around 1787.
